2.810 may be one of the most popular mechanical engineering graduate classes. Small wonder, since the final project in that class involves building remote control cars. I was a member of a team of six students that designed and built six copies of the car shown below. We took full advantage of Pro/Engineer sheet metal module, and the rapid manufacturing capabilities of provided by a water jet cutter in the Laboratory for Manufacturing and Productivity (LMP) to create this car. The design accommodates the need for an easily swappable control box, and is among the lightest and fastest vehicles entered in the race. Yes, it is ugly. It is also functional; it won the race and shattered the previous race record by a handsome 21 seconds...
